Is Your Space On-Trend?

Stay on-trend with your home's design with these few modern ideas.

Warm, earthy neutrals and exquisite, navy blues saturate trendy home magazines and websites for 2023. Open your mind to create a space that is chic, comfortable, and functional. Channel your inner courage with color and contemporary charm. A big change can be affordable, too, with inexpensive ways to make those adjustments like simple paint and fabrics. Whether you are selling your home, renting it out, or you are seeking an aesthetically pleasing place to live, knowing the current interior design trends will help you create a modern and fresh space. Channel your inner designer and open your mind to something new with a peek at the current design trends that will give your space a fresh, modern feel.

Wall color is one of the most cost-effective ways to change the look and feel of a room, and the change is substantial! Current trends state that earth tones are in which means browns, grays, tans, and even light, gentle pinks. Behr’s color of the year is Blank Canvas, a mellow yet rich, neutral color which will offer a clean pallet to any room. Another way to adorn your walls with fashionable flare is with wallpaper! It may be surprising to you to hear that it has made a comeback, especially if you have had the pleasure of slowly and tediously peeling back the old wallpaper from the seventies. Floral is still a favorite go-to for wall covering, but geometric shapes are the way to say “I am trendy!” Simple, textural patterns complement the trends as well, and this is also the case for bathroom and kitchen tiles.

Flooring takes the brunt of wear and tear in a home, but nowadays the products are durable and practical while still adding beauty to the home. Tiles in aged finishes are back in with bold textures, flowers for days, and stone that mirrors the look of wood or even shells. Materials can include smooth porcelain, clear and colored glass, marble, and ceramic. Tile colors range in many shapes and hues, and can be used in all rooms, yet are primarily found in the kitchen and bathrooms. Patterns like checkered subway tiles and two-toned motifs can add flair to a boring room. Another functional way to cover your floors is with luxury vinyl that looks like wood and is hardy and elegant; it will stand up to children, work boots, and even puppies. They work in bedrooms, hallways, and kitchens, too.

Another way to change a bathroom or kitchen is with appliances. Stainless steel is the safe way to dress a kitchen, but did you know that color is in, too? Samsung’s new Bespoke refrigertor has removable panels so you can change its color when the mood fits. Panels are light pink, deep green, and teal to name a few. Pair it with trendy tiled floors, funky faucets, and a mosaic tile backsplash, or go grand with a granite island. Complement your bathrooms with the same color palette and tile work to create a smooth flow from room to room. Maybe a Brutalist backsplash in blues is more your style, and if so, you may call yourself on-trend.

Brutalism is big now with its straight lines and blocky forms that offer an elegant, bare bones type of living. Brutalism sounds harsh, right? It’s not! The style is soft, sustainable, and oh so elegant. Giampiero Tagliaferri, tells Vogue Magazine, “Compared to the past, the new brutalist style results in a softer approach that incorporates natural elements like wood, stones, plants, and sustainable materials resulting in a warmer and more welcoming aesthetic.” Brutalism is punctuated by simplicity and a nod to our dear planet.

Sustainable and green living have become quite the trend, and hopefully for the sake of the world, they are here to stay. Not only are they kind to our planet, but there are tons of materials that cater to the endurance of our world. Green means using environmental-friendly materials, whereas sustainable is more focused on the future impact of our environment, general health, and more. Instead of tossing that trendy disposable furniture to the curb, consider refinishing it instead of buying new with sandpaper and stain to welcome it to the modern day. Reupholster that old sofa that’s been in the family for years with a modern fabric. Thrift store finds can add character to a drab room as well, and they are planet- and wallet-friendly.

Current trends are saturated in clean simplicity with elegance and sustainability in mind. Our planet is the theme of interior design this year, not only with lovely textiles and a soft earthy color palette like sandy hues and soft greens, but also with the way we produce and consume our design elements. Although neutrals are in, don’t be afraid of color. Whether you plan to rent your place out, sell it, or call it your own, a few bucks for a can of paint or some window treatments can go a long way to create an up-to-date space. Of course, if you are in the market to sell, be sure to consult your real estate agent before you make major changes to your home, but either way, take chances and create a space that is fun, fashionable, and fresh.
